Meaning of the Word “Qur’an”

1. The linguistic meaning of Qur’an

Allah gave the name Al-Qur’an to His Book during the early years of revelation, and the word appears more than sixty times in the Qur’an. Scholars expressed several views about its linguistic origin.

The best-known and majority view is that Qur’an comes from the root qara’a (ق ر أ), meaning to read or recite. Other scholars described it as a proper noun, connected it with qara’in—things that accompany or resemble one another—or connected it with qarana, to join, because its verses and surahs are joined together.

2. Evidence from the Qur’an

The Qur’an itself connects this name with recitation. In the widely recited reading, Qur’an in 17:106 and qur’anahu—its recitation—in 75:17–18 share the root letters qaf, ra, and hamzah (ق ر أ).

3. A distinctive name for recitation

The verb qara’a has verbal nouns including qira’ah and qur’an. In these verses, qur’an is used with the sense of recitation. The Qur’an also uses the verb itself when commanding believers to seek Allah’s protection before reciting.

This supports the meaning Al-Qur’an: The Recitation. The name is especially fitting for a Book continually recited in prayer, memorized by millions, taught from generation to generation, and recited even by Muslims whose first language is not Arabic.

4. The continuing recitation

Classical Arabic usage also allows the form Qur’an to carry an intensified sense: an abundant, continuous, or ultimate recitation. The reality of Muslim life reflects that meaning. Across centuries, believers have recited the Qur’an daily, preserved it in memory, contemplated it, and taught it to their children.

The name was revealed when the Muslim community in Makkah was still small and vulnerable. Its worldwide recitation across later generations is therefore a powerful point of reflection. May Allah make us among those who recite His Book sincerely, understand it, and live by its guidance.
